OUR 50th ANNIVERSARY
EARLY AUSTRALIAN SAMPLERS
Wanda McPherson

An exhibition of embroidered samplers will be held at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, Lilydale as part of the exhibition programme to celebrate the Embroiderers Guild, Victoria`s 50th anniversary in 2010 – 2011.

A very successful exhibition of samplers was held in 1989, but unfortunately very few of these samplers still exist. If you have a sampler worked in Australia between 1830 and 1960 we would like to hear from you and hopefully include it in our exhibition. We are looking for samplers of all kinds, including school work, pictorial and commemorative samplers.

If you have a sampler, or know of anyone that may have one, please contact:

  • Wanda McPherson c/- EGV: (03) 9509 2222
  • Louise Keene (Exhibitions Curator) on 9294 6313
  • or send a note to the Guild marked “Sampler Exhibition”.

The Mary Ann Kirkby Sampler ( see left column)

The Mary Ann Kirkby sampler was worked in the Ballarat area.  We know that Mary Ann was given the name of her elder sister who had died two years earlier when only a few months old, and that her mother`s maiden name was Loughlin. If anyone knows the history of the Kirkby family (or the Loughlin family), especially in the Ballarat area, I would be very pleased to hear from you.
